Expression & Being: Landscape Light Installations, Barry Underwood

May 29, 2014 Ryo Ishii

Barry Underwood transforms natural landscapes into something surreal yet comfortably familiar. Utilising LED lights, luminescent material, and other photographic effects, Barry creates fleeting abstract landscapes composed by both natural and artificial light. As noted in his artist statement, his inspiration is derived from the nature and history of each of the local landscapes visits:

My artwork examines community and land-use in rural, suburban and urban sites. I created this series of installations by researching local agricultural, industrial, and recreational land-use. Curiosity about ecological and social history of specific places drives my work. By revealing the beauty and potential of an ordinary landscape an everyday scene is transformed into a memorable, visual experience. Each photograph image is a dialogue – the result of my direct encounter with nature and history. Inspired by land art, landscape photography and painting, as well as cinema, my images are both surreal and familiar.

Expression & Being is an ongoing series exploring our human insights and connections invoked by creative, artistic and human expression. We believe that our expressions have the capacity to inspire awareness of self, society, planet and existence which then can be applied to our everyday behaviour: living life that is as inspired as the output itself.

It is through inspiration that we arrived at our endeavour in high-quality organic fashion, and by sharing our favourite music, literature, films and other artistic media, we hope to give thanks to a global community of creatives, artists and humanists who continually inspire us to move our feet forward on our path.
